The New York State Senate Tuesday passed the Tropical Deforestation-Free Procurement Act , a bill aimed at protecting tropical rainforests and human rights in other countries through state government relations with contractors. The bill will require state contractors who work with commodities derived from rainforests to certify that their products are not contributing to deforestation or degradation.

Eight of my first eleven months of initial jail confinement were spent in a solid concrete cell with a full steel door. It was a freezing tomb in the damp winter and a sweltering oven in the humid summer. I was transferred from the “parish jail” to the Louisiana State Penitentiary in November 1966.
