Environmental law organization ClientEarth Tuesday announced legal action against the Board of Directors of Shell over the company’s failure to adopt and implement a climate strategy plan. ClientEarth, as a shareholder, seeks to hold the company’s 13 directors personally liable for breaching their duties under the UK Companies Act by arguing that the Board has failed to adopt and implement an adequate climate strategy.

The International Court of Justice (ICJ) issued an order Wednesday demanding that Russia “immediately suspend” its military actions in Ukraine. Ukraine filed a request for provisional measures last month. Provisional measures are emergency actions that bind and “create international legal obligations” for any parties involved in a dispute.

Returning citizens in white rural communities face the same high barriers to finding a job as African Americans in urban areas, according to a Texas Southern University study. Both groups are also similarly at high risk for recidivism as a result, the study adds. “This is not a Black issue or a White issue nor an urban issue or a rural issue,” wrote researchers in the paper published by the Center for Justice Research at Texas Southern.

The Irish Data Protection Authority (DPC) Tuesday fined Meta Platforms Ireland Limited €17m for a series of data breaches affecting up to 30 million Facebook users that were disclosed to the Irish DPC by the social media company in 2018. The Irish DPC is Meta’s lead privacy regulator in the EU and opened this inquiry after receiving 12 data breach notifications within a six-month period from 7 June 2018 to 4 December 2018.
