A new Committee to Protect Journalist (CPJ) report released Thursday finds the number of journalists who are behind bars worldwide reached a global high in 2021. CPJ finds 293 reporters were imprisoned, at least 24 journalists were killed as a result of their work, and another 18 died under mysterious circumstances as of December 1 this year. 2021 marks the sixth consecutive year that CPJ has recorded over 250 imprisoned journalists worldwide.

The New York City Council Thursday voted to grant certain noncitizens the right to vote in municipal elections, making it the largest city in the United States to extend the vote to lawful permanent residents and non-citizens authorized to work in the US. The municipal legislation, Int. 1867 grants the vote to noncitizen “municipal voters,” defined as a New York City resident who is either a lawful permanent resident or who holds work authorization, as well as DACA holders.

A British appellate court Friday overturned a lower court decision that barred Wikileaks founder Julian Assange from being extradited to the United States. In July 2020, the United States requested the extradition of Mr. Assange based on charges of illegally receiving and publishing classified information. Mr. Assange claims his extradition is barred by the Extradition Act of 2003 because of his mental health condition.
