The Hengaw Organization for Human Rights announced Thursday that Barzin Hamzeh-Zadeh, a 16-year-old boy whom the Iranian government tortured, had died from his injuries. At age 15, Hamzeh-Zadeh was arrested in 2022 during the Jin, Jiyan, and Azadi movements and was held for a week by Iranian security forces. He was regularly beaten during his time there.

The Indian High Commission in Sri Lanka posted a statement on X (formerly Twitter) on Friday that 21 Indian fishermen, who were detained by the Sri Lankan Navy due to alleged involvement in illegal poaching in Sri Lankan waters, were repatriated from Sri Lanka to Chennai, India. Fishing is a bone of contention between India and Sri Lanka. At their closest points, India and Sri Lanka are only around 55 kilometers (34 miles) apart.

The Nigeria Supreme Court on Friday ruled that Shell should be granted a hearing over its alleged involvement in an oil spill in the Niger Delta, as per news sources. This overturns the judgment of the Court of Appeal that halted the company’s sale and ordered payment of a judgment claim before hearing its appeal. The Supreme Court judgment is currently unavailable to the public.

New Jersey Governor Phil Murphy signed the New Voter Empowerment Act on Thursday, allowing 17-year-olds to vote in primary elections if they are 18 by the succeeding general election.
