The US Supreme Court Tuesday declined to hear an appeal by a professional photographer who sued a hospitality tech company for removing copyright metadata from his photos in violation of the Digital Millenium Copyright Act (DMCA). The US Court of Appeals for the Eleventh Circuit affirmed the district court’s dismissal of the case on summary judgment.

West Virginia Attorney General Patrick Morrisey announced Wednesday that pharmacy retailer Walgreens has agreed to pay an $83 million settlement over its opioid distribution practices within an 8-year period. The state of West Virginia sued the pharmacy chain, along with others, for failure to maintain “effective controls against diversion as a distributor and dispenser,” which the Attorney General claimed contributed to the oversupply of opioids in West Virginia.

US federal prosecutors Tuesday filed a notice stating that they will not seek the death penalty against accused Texas Walmart shooter Patrick Wood Crusius. Assistant US Attorney Margaret Leachman filed the notice in the US District Court for the Western District of Texas, El Paso Division. Crusius has yet to face trial for the 2019 shooting in which 22 people lost their lives.

The Indian Supreme Court Monday ruled that bail granted under Section 167 of the Code of Criminal Procedure can be revoked even if the investigating agency failed to complete the investigation and file a chargesheet within the given timeframe if the accused has committed a non-bailable offense and a strong case is made out against him. The court noted that an accused granted default bail cannot claim special rights to remain on bail.

In the most recent fiscal period, the three-member board granted parole to 409 inmates, rejecting pleas from over 3,500 others. The percentage of granted paroles has dropped each of the previous four years.
