New Zealand’s Supreme Court Friday overturned Peter Ellis’ 1993 child sexual abuse conviction due to evidentiary errors in his original trial. The court found that unbalanced expert witness testimony, parental suggestion and unreliable memory evidence led to Ellis’ wrongful conviction. The SPT reported that as a result of recent violence and decades long state abandonment, prisons lack essential services and resources. The SPT visited nine places of deprivation of liberty in three cities from September 25 until October 1.

The city of Philadelphia has issued an apology for the unethical medical experiments performed on mostly Black inmates by University of Pennsylvania researcher Dr. Albert Kligman at Holmesburg Prison from the 1950s through the 1970s, reports the Associated Press. Kligman conducted dermatological, biochemical and pharmaceutical experiments that intentionally exposed about 300 inmates to viruses, fungus, asbestos and chemical agents including a component of Agent Orange.

Alex Friedmann, a Nashville criminal justice advocate, has been sentenced to 40 years in prison for hiding guns and other weapons in the walls of a Tennessee jail while it was under construction in 2019, reports Kirsten Ficus for USA Today. Friedman was found guilty of vandalism in 2020, a Class A felony, after being caught on camera impersonating a construction contractor, stealing two keys and hiding three firearms and numerous saws and razor blades in the city’s Downtown Detention Center.
