The United Nations Human Rights Office (UNHRO) Friday expressed concern over Turkey’s adoption of amendments to various laws “that risk substantially curtailing freedom of expression in the country.” On Thursday, Turkey’s parliament passed a new bill that could see journalists and social activists jailed for spreading “disinformation” for up to three years.

India Supreme Court rules human rights activist must remain imprisoned

The Supreme Court of India Saturday ruled that human rights activist Gokarakonda Naga Saibaba must remain in prison despite procedural failures in his trial, overruling the Bombay High Court. In its 101-page judgment , the Bombay High Court argued Saibaba is entitled to a retrial because the sanction for his prosecution was invalid at the time of conviction.

India Supreme Court delivers split verdict over Hijab prohibition in schools

Justices Hemant Gupta and Sudhanshu Dhulia of the Supreme Court of India (SCt) Thursday delivered a split decision in a case concerning the prohibition of hijabs in educational institutions. Justice Gupta upheld the ban and dismissed all the appeals to the Karnataka High Court (HCt). Justice Dhulia allowed all the appeals, set aside the Karnataka HCt judgment and held that the entire concept of essential religious practice was not essential to the matter.

Filipino lawyers organization National Union of Peoples’ Lawyers (NUPL) Sunday alleged that 59 lawyers were killed in the course of their work under former President Rodrigo Duterte’s rule. NUPL recorded a total 117 attacks against lawyers during Duterte’s term.
