US appeals court rules in favor of Native American tribe’s hunting rights on ceded lands

The US Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit ruled on Tuesday in favor of the Northwestern Band of the Shoshone Nation’s dispute with the state of Idaho regarding the tribe’s hunting rights on US land. The court found that an 1868 treaty between the Shoshone and the US allows tribe members to hunt on ceded lands without having to permanently reside on a Native American reservation.

Reporters Without Borders (RSF) announced on Wednesday the release of French-Afghan journalist Mortaza Behboudi by a Taliban court in Afghanistan. Following a 284-day detention, all charges, encompassing allegations of espionage and illegal support for foreigners, were nullified during a criminal court hearing held in Kabul, as per the statement. He was immediately released from Pul-e-Charkhi prison in Kabul.

On Thursday the UK Home Office announced new procedures for asylum seekers who refuse to be housed on the Bibby Stockholm barge after the UK High Court upheld the Home Office’s plans to force 39 asylum seekers to return to the barge. The new rules state that if a person refuses the offered asylum on the barge, they will be evicted from their current hotel accommodation within 24 hours and treated like a trespasser if they don’t leave the hotel.
