The US Department of Justice (DOJ) Friday announced that former Panama President Ricardo Martinelli’s sons were sentenced earlier that day in a New York City federal courthouse t o 36 months of imprisonment. They will also pay a USD 250,000 fine each and close to USD 19 million in cumulative forfeiture, and forfeit various assets for their participation in a bribery and money laundering scheme involving Odebrecht S.A.

According to the complaint, the Cambridge Analytica Facebook data breach was the “largest consumer privacy scandal” in US history.

The US Supreme Court Monday ruled 6-3 in Shinn v. Ramirez that “a federal habeas court may not conduct an evidentiary hearing or otherwise consider evidence beyond the state-court record based on the ineffective assistance of state postconviction counsel.” In Shinn , two prisoners filed for federal habeas relief under 28 USC §2254. The Sixth Amendment guarantees criminal defendants the right to effective assistance of counsel at trial.

A jury at the Superior Court of Quebec Friday found the individual behind Quebec City’s Halloween sword attacks in 2020 guilty of first-degree murder. All told, the 11-person jury convicted the attacker, Carl Girouard, of two counts of first-degree murder and five counts of attempted murder. The attacks on October 31, 2020 left two people dead and five others injured within Quebec City’s historic district.

Justice Elena Kagan wrote the opinion in Morgan v. Sundance, Inc. Plaintiff Robyn Morgan worked at a Taco Bell franchise owned by Sundance. When she came to believe that some of Sundance’s pay practices violated federal wage-and-hour law, she filed a class action lawsuit against the company.
