The Georgia Parole Board denied clemency for inmate Willie James Pye on Tuesday, making him soon to be the first inmate executed in the state since 2020. Pye was convicted and sentenced to death in 1996 after the murder of Alicia Lynn Yarbough, with whom he was involved in a relationship. During the clemency meeting conducted by the Georgia State Board of Pardons and Parole, Pye’s lawyers relied on his intellectual disability and troubled upbringing.

The US Supreme Court ruled Tuesday that Yonas Fikre’s challenge to his previous placement on the No Fly List can proceed, rejecting the government’s claim that his removal from the list rendered the lawsuit void. The court unanimously decided that the government failed to demonstrate the case was moot, finding it was possible the government could place the individual on the list again in the future.

The New York Court of Appeals ruled Tuesday that a lawsuit from Tax Equity Now New York (TENNY), which alleges disparities in the New York City property tax system are disproportionately burdening low-income and majority-people-of-color neighborhoods, can go forward in the New York state courts. Judge Jenny Riviera, writing for the court, ruled that the Appellate Division’s prior dismissal of the case for failure to state a claim was improper.

The German state of Bavaria banned Tuesday the use of “gender-sensitive” language in schools and universities. Ministers expressed that while they want to uphold gender equality in language, the use of symbols within words could impact comprehensibility and have therefore banned the practice. The ban was passed by the Council of Ministers in Bavaria to prevent the use of this language in schools, classrooms and university lectures.
