Russia withdraws from Council of Europe

The Russian Federation Thursday announced its withdrawal from the Council of Europe (“the Council”). The country claimed that EU and NATO countries are using their absolute majority to continue to destroy the Council, of which Russia will no longer will be a part. Russia joined the Council of Europe, a leading human rights organization of the continent, in 1996.

UN human rights office confirms over 500 civilian deaths in Ukraine

The UN human rights office (OHCHR) Friday confirmed that 549 Ukrainian civilians have been killed by the Russian invasion of Ukraine. The OHCHR said in a press statement that, among those who have been killed, 41 were children. A further 957 individuals have sustained injuries. The conflict that broke out on February 24 has subjected Ukrainian civilians to explosions and military fighting.

Swiss court rejects appeal to withhold information relating to Ghosn investigation

The Federal Criminal Court of Switzerland Friday rejected an appeal by an unnamed Arab businessman to stop Japanese prosecutors from acquiring access to his bank accounts. The Texas Supreme Court Friday ruled against abortion providers’ federal challenge to a state abortion ban, holding that certain state officials do not have the authority to enforce the law.
