Twelve states have enacted 35 new criminal penalties targeting election officials since 2020, 31 of which were enacted in Republican-controlled states, reports the Idaho Capital Sun. The new laws have exacerbated an already toxic environment for election officials due to the pandemic, threats and harassment.
