It appears that, whatever the value of being an Oberlin graduate may be today, the value of being an Oberlin lawyer is virtually limitless. The jury in June 2019 awarded the Gibsons $44 million in compensatory and punitive damages. Gibson’s, a small family store and bakery, has been part of this small community since 1885.

The letter was sent by the new lawyer for Holden and his parents Shannon and Raul Armenta. If a full and effective retraction is issued (and published as prominently as the offending statement), it can limit damages or bar punitive damages entirely in some states. It also turns out that he is Native American.
