Boston law firm Choate Hall & Stewart has announced job cuts affecting about 5% of its employees.

The layoffs include lawyers, according to an internal memo obtained by Above the Law.

The memo said Choate, like many of its competitors, is facing a challenging economic environment.

The conditions have “impacted work levels in certain parts of the firm,” the memo said. “After monitoring these developments carefully for a period of time, we have come to the difficult decision that we currently have too many lawyers and business professionals in certain practice areas and departments based on the current demands of our clients.”

The memo said the job cuts are not a reflection on any of the impacted individuals. Those let go “are wonderful and talented people who have made significant contributions to our clients, the firm and our culture,” the memo said.
