Suspended lawyer gets jail time for smuggling drugs into jail

A suspended Massachusetts lawyer has been sentenced to six months in prison after jurors found her guilty Friday for smuggling Suboxone into the Plymouth County Jail.
Suspended lawyer Elana Gordon, 45, of Bridgewater, Massachusetts, was accused of passing 61 Suboxone strips to an inmate in May 2018 after entering the correctional facility using her attorney privileges, according to MassLive.com and an Oct. 25 press release by Plymouth County District Attorney Timothy Cruz.
The inmate was not Gordon’s client. Investigators seized the strips in the inmate’s cell.
Suboxone is used to treat opioid dependence, according to previous coverage of Gordon’s arrest by the Patriot Ledger. A strip sells for about $20, but in jail the price is about $200, according to the Patriot Ledger.
Gordon was convicted for distributing a class B substance and delivering drugs to a prison.
Gordon was suspended for a year and a day in October 2018, according to online information on the website of the Massachusetts Board of Bar Overseers.
A summary of the suspension order said Gordon neglected a case, failed to communicate with a client, misrepresented facts to the bar counsel, failed to cooperate in the ethics investigation, and failed to keep adequate records of her IOLTA account. She also continued to hold herself out as an attorney during an administrative suspension for failing to cooperate in a bar investigation of a dishonored IOLTA account check.
