Missouri AG accuses Planned Parenthood of assisting minors travel out of state to obtain abortions

Missouri Attorney General Andrew Bailey filed a lawsuit on Thursday accusing a Planned Parenthood organization affiliate of violating state laws by helping transport minors into Kansas for abortions. The lawsuit is based on alleged camera footage showing staffers transporting minors across state lines to get an abortion without parental consent.

In the filing, Bailey cited a covert video that was captured by a far-right activist group, Project Veritas, showing Planned Parenthood removing minors from school using altered doctors’ notes and transporting them to Kansas to have the procedure done. Bailey argued that this is a violation of Missouri law. “Permitting a child to obtain an abortion without the counsel of a parent would violate parental rights that are deeply rooted in our Nation’s history and tradition,” Bailey wrote.

Bailey asked the court to find that the conduct had occurred and order Planned Parenthood Great Plains, the affiliate, from engaging in conduct that assists minors in obtaining an abortion across state lines.

“This is the beginning of the end for Planned Parenthood in the State of Missouri,” Bailey stated in a press release. “What they conceal and conspire to do in the dark of night has now been uncovered.”

The organization affiliate President and CEO of Planned Parenthood Great Plains Emily Wales condemned that such actions have occurred. “We will continue following state and federal laws and proudly providing Missourians with the compassionate sexual and reproductive care that remains available to them in a state with a total abortion ban,” said Wales in an email-issued press release.

Strict abortion laws have been prevalent in the state following the US Supreme Court’s 2022 decision to overturn Roe v. Wade, which had enshrined abortion access as a right across the country. This lawsuit is one of many actions included in a multi-year campaign centered on driving Planned Parenthood from the state.
