Leader of plot to kidnap Michigan governor sentenced to 16 years prison

A Michigan federal judge Tuesday sentenced Adam Fox to 16 years in prison for leading a plot to kidnap Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer. In August, a federal jury convicted Fox on charges of conspiracy to kidnap the governor and conspiracy to use weapons of mass destruction against persons or property.

US District Judge Robert Jonker sentenced Fox to 16 years in prison with five years of supervised release despite government prosecutors’ request that Fox receive a life sentence. The government argued that Fox was the “driving force” behind the plot to kidnap Whitmer. According to reporters within the courtroom, Jonker did not believe a life sentence was necessary to properly punish Fox for his role in the plot and to deter future attempts.

In 2020, Fox was a part of a plot to kidnap Whitmer from her vacation home near Elk Rapids, Michigan. Fox, along with several other individuals, planned to use destructive devices against Whitmer’s security detail and any responding law enforcement to accomplish their plot. However, the FBI became aware of the plot before it could occur. The FBI arrested Fox and his co-conspirators in October 2020.

Fox’s co-conspirator Barry Croft Jr. is set to be sentenced tomorrow in the same court. A federal jury convicted Croft on the same charges as Fox along with an additional charge of knowingly possessing an unregistered destructive device. Two other men involved in the plot, Ty Garbin and Kaleb Franks, already pleaded guilty and received 30 months and four years prison time, respectively. A Michigan state court previously sentenced three other men for their involvement in the plot.
