Louisiana judge lifts temporary block on state law banning abortions

A Louisiana judge has removed a temporary block on the state abortion law, allowing the state to enforce its ban on nearly all abortions.

On June 27, Judge Robin Giarrusso of the Orleans Parish Civil District Court issued a temporary restraining order blocking the state abortion law from going into effect. However, Judge Ethel Julien of the same court on Friday stated that extending the order temporarily blocking the law was beyond her authority.

Hope Medical Group for Women, a women’s health clinic, along with some New Orleans medical students filed a lawsuit seeking a temporary block to stop the enforcement of the abortion law. The state successfully argued that the court was an improper venue to bring the lawsuit and that it should have been filed where state officials work.

Louisiana Attorney General Jeff Landry, following the removal of the order, warned clinics and doctors at the court, “If they continue to operate, they do so under their own risk.” Landry also said, “If you don’t like the laws of the states, you can move to one under which you like. That’s the greatness of America.”

Also on Friday, US President Joe Biden signed an executive order to ease access to medical services for abortion and contraceptives.

The case will now proceed in the Baton Rouge state court.
