The Idaho Ways and Means Committee Wednesday introduced House Bill 186 in the Idaho House of Representatives, which would provide for execution by firing squad.

The bill provides that if lethal injection is unavailable as a method of execution at the time of an execution, a firing squad would be the state’s chosen method of execution. Additionally, if lethal injection is ruled to be unconstitutional, the default method of execution in Idaho will be by firing squad. Finally, the bill provides that the director of the Idaho Department of Corrections determines the procedure for execution.

Currently, 27 states in the US maintain the death penalty by law. However, last week, Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro announced that he will not issue execution warrants while in office, thus continuing a moratorium on the death penalty in Pennsylvania. In December, the Death Penalty Information Center released its annual year-end report on the death penalty in the US, highlighting its declining but problematic use across the US.
