In an “annual” report that hasn’t been released since 2019, the Commission to Combat Police Corruption says several cops who should have been fired for egregious conduct were allowed to keep their jobs, reports The City. Investigators said the discipline meted out by the NYPD was insufficient in 38 out of 338 cases (just over 11 percent) that were concluded between October 2018 and September 2019.
One case highlighted in the report was that of Detective William McGrade, who contacted and sent inappropriate messages to several tipsters to the Crime Stoppers hotline, including telling a woman she “sounded sexy over the phone, and asked her what she was wearing, and whether she slept naked.” McGrade was only placed on a one-year probation, despite previous misconduct. The bulk of terminations recommended by the CCPC last month were for officers who provided false information to the department.
