Theodoric Meyer reports for Politico: “An influential progressive judicial group is asking President-elect Joe Biden to select a Black woman to be the administration’s top lawyer at the [United States] Supreme Court — and imploring him not to pick several well-known Democratic attorneys who frequently argue before the court.” The group — Demand Justice — sent a letter recommending seven candidates for the Solicitor General position, including California Supreme Court Justice Leondra Kruger. The letter was also signed by six other groups.
According to the article, the letter argues that “the solicitor general appointment should serve as a kind of down payment on Biden’s pledge to nominate the first Black woman to the Supreme Court.”
Over a year ago, Demand Justice included Justice Kruger on a short list of 32 potential U.S. Supreme Court nominees. Justices Goodwin Liu and Mariano-Florentino Cuéllar were also on that list. All three are still on the group’s list, which now has 43 names.
