Amnesty International report documents Myanmar military atrocities

Amnesty International released a report Tuesday documenting atrocities committed by the the Myanmar military including the burning of villages, destruction of civilian infrastructure and extrajudicial execution of civilians. After seizing power in a coup d’état on 1 February 2021, the military committed “gross human rights violations” in Myanmar’s Kayin and the Kayah States from December 2021 to March 2022.

US District Court Judge Paul L. Friedman Wednesday granted John Hinckley, the man who shot President Ronald Reagan in 1981, freedom from all his remaining restrictions. This unconditional release occurs 41 years after Hinckley’s assassination attempt on President Reagan. In September Judge Friedman stated his intent to release Hinckley from his remaining release restrictions on June 15 as long as Hinckley behaved well.

US District Judge Margo Brodie had originally sentenced Fareed Mumuni to 17 years in prison. Following a decision from the US Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit which called the sentence “shockingly low,” Judge Brodie increased the sentence to 25 years.

Grand jury indicts Buffalo shooter on 25 charges including domestic terrorism

A New York grand jury indicted Wednesday the man accused of carrying out a racist shooting at Tops Market in Buffalo on May 14. Payton Gendron shot 13 people, killing of 10 of them. All the victims who died were black. Buffalo police arrested Gendron after the shooting ceased, and he surrendered to the police. The indictment includes 25 charges. The first charge is first-degree domestic act of terrorism motivated by hate.
