US Supreme Court allows transgender migrant to challenge deportation order over risk of anti-LGBT persecution

The US Supreme Court unanimously held Thursday that a transgender migrant may appeal a Board of Immigration Appeals (BIA) decision that denied her relief from deportation. The court reversed the US Court of Appeals for the Fifth Circuit’s ruling that it did not have jurisdiction over Estrella Santos-Zacaria’s request for judicial review.

UK Government to reduce number of EU laws repealed in 2023

The UK Business and Trade Secretary announced Wednesday that the UK will reduce the number of EU laws being revoked or replaced from 4,000 to 600 by the end of the year. Trade Secretary Kemi Badenoch says that this is partly due to ‘risks of legal uncertainty,’ but Badenoch reiterates that the government will aim to replace important EU laws through the Retained EU Law (Revocation and Reform) 2022 Bill (REUL).

UN rights council condemns Sudan violence amid mounting civilian casualties

The UN Human Rights Council on Thursday narrowly passed a resolution condemning violations of humanitarian law amid the ongoing violence that has swept Sudan in recent weeks. The resolution, which slammed violations of international law on both sides of the conflict, and also expanded the mandate of an expert monitoring group in the country, was adopted by 18 countries, and rejected by 15, including Sudan itself, with 14 abstentions.

Illinois Governor J.B. Pritzker signed a bill into law Wednesday that will provide disability benefits to first responders who contracted COVID-19 before vaccines were available. House Bill (HB) 3162, known as the Act-of-Duty Bill, previously only provided disability pay for various physical and mental conditions, including heart attacks. Specifically, the law provides benefits for those who contracted COVID-19 between March 9, 2020 and June 30, 2021.
