The Norwegian Directorate of Immigration (UDI) Monday confirmed to the AP that high ranking Russian paramilitary commander Andrey Medvedev defected to Norway and applied for asylum. This marks one of the first instances of Russian paramilitary personnel defecting to the west since the start of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. In a video recorded Monday, Medvedev announced his entry into Norway with the intention of applying for asylum.

Two UK rail workers unions Tuesday announced strikes after failing to reach a deal with train operators. One of the unions, the Associated Society of Locomotive Engineers and Firemen (ASLEF) announced two, one-day strikes. The other, the National Union of Rail, Maritime, and Transport Workers (RMT) announced they will join ASLEF in two, one-day strike as well.

A French court Tuesday began trial against 13 individuals linked to Les Barjols, a far-right French extremist group. The 13 individuals are accused of plotting to assassinate French President Emmanuel Macron along with planning a string of racially-motivated attacks. French authorities arrested members Les Barjols in 2018 after anti-terrorism units investigated reports of a violent plot against Macron.

Additionally, Commissioner Mark Rowley announced that all 45,000 officers employed by the police force serving the Greater London area will be rechecked for any missed offenses. The US Supreme Court Tuesday heard oral arguments in Turkiye Halk Bankasi A.S. v. United States , a case which will determine if US district courts have subject matter jurisdiction over criminal prosecutions of foreign sovereigns and their instrumentalities. First docketed May 17, 2022, the case originated from the criminal prosecution of the Turkish state-owned bank HalkBank by the US for its alleged involvement in aiding Iran to evade financial sanctions.

UK Foreign Secretary James Cleverly Monday told the House of Commons that Iran “will be held to account” for the execution of British-Iranian citizen and former Iranian Deputy Minister of Defence Alireza Akbari. Cleverly called the execution a “cowardly and shameful act of leadership” and said that the Iranian government had misused the death penalty as a “political tool” to silence its opponents and dissenters.
