To start off, I should make a confession. I have been in the legal field for over 30 years and a paralegal going on eight years. In those years, I have only worked on civil cases, and that was my niche. Then, an opportunity came along to work for the County Public Defender’s Office, defending people in misdemeanor, felony, and now the only paralegal in the office on capital cases.

The US Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit Wednesday reinstated a New York law that limits protest near courthouses. The reinstated law, New York Penal Law § 215.50 (7) , prohibits people from engaging in conduct “concerning the conduct of a trial being held” within 200 feet of a courthouse. Should someone be found in violation of the law, they could face criminal contempt charges. .

Opioid manufacturer Teva Pharmaceuticals Industries Tuesday announced a $4.35 billion settlement with state and local governments to resolve lawsuits concerning Teva’s role in fueling the US opioid epidemic. The settlement is not yet finalized. Teva is an Israeli multinational pharmaceutical company which manufactures prescription medication including opioids.

Former Minneapolis police officers J, Alexander Kueng and Tou Thao were sentenced Wednesday for violating George Floyd’s civil rights by not intervening when former officer Derek Chauvin knelt on Floyd’s neck, killing Floyd. The court sentenced Kueng to 3 years in prison and Thao to 3.5 years. The fourth officer, Thomas Lane, was sentenced to four years last week.

The UN Human Rights Committee Wednesday called for Hong Kong authorities to urgently repeal the Beijing-decreed national security law amid concerns of the legislation threatening civil rights. Within the report, the Committee expressed deep concern about “the overly broad interpretation” of the law, which it reports has led to the “arrests of over 200 people, including 12 children” since 2020.

The US Senate Committee on Commerce, Science and Transportation Wednesday approved two bills that would expand the safety and privacy accorded to children and teenagers on commercial electronic platforms. The move is seen as a response to concerns over algorithms used by social media platforms such as TikTok, Snapchat and YouTube. The first bill, the Kids Online Safety Act ( S. 3663 ), was introduced on February 16.

Share The Supreme Court on Thursday refused to postpone the execution of Joe Nathan James, who was scheduled to die in an Alabama prison at 7 p.m. EDT. James was sentenced to death for the 1994 murder of Faith Hall, his former girlfriend. Hall’s family had urged Alabama Gov. Kay Ivey to convert James’ death sentence to a sentence of life in prison, but Ivey declined to do so.
