Biden administration announces ban on Russia-affiliated ships from US ports

President Biden Thursday announced in remarks to reporters that the US was banning Russian-affiliated ships from US ports. The US joins its allies in continuing to increase pressure on Russia over war actions in Ukraine.

Biden appeared before reporters Thursday morning to update the nation on US support to Ukraine in the ongoing war between Russia and Ukraine. Biden announced a series of new US actions meant to support Ukraine and further punish Russia for its continued aggression.

Among these actions were $800 million financial aid to Ukraine, the facilitation of weapons systems transfers to Ukraine, the “Unite for Ukraine” program, additional financial pressure on Russia, as well as the ban on Russian-affiliated ships from US ports.

The ban of Russian-affiliated ships was formally announced in a presidential proclamation. According to the proclamation, Russia’s war actions in Ukraine constitute a national emergency by reason of a disturbance or threatened disturbance of international relations to the US. Under national emergency powers, Biden authorized the Secretary of Homeland Security to regulate and prohibit Russian-affiliated ships from docking or accessing US ports.

According to Biden, the move further denies Russia the international economic benefits they enjoyed in the past. Biden said: “That means no ship—no ship that sails under the Russian flag or that is owned or operated by Russian interests will be allowed to dock in a United States port or access our shores. None. None.”

The US joins Canada and the UK in banning Russian-affiliated ships from the countries’ respective ports.
