Second Set Of Layoffs Strike Am Law 100 Biglaw Firm

The cuts are being made to 'manage costs.'

Layoff NoticeFollowing a slow 2023 that saw a dip in revenue, Biglaw firm Bryan Cave Leighton Paisner is making its second round of layoffs in a year. This time, the firm is cutting almost 50 jobs in their U.S. and U.K. offices. The majority of the laid-off employees worked in business services positions.

In response to the layoffs, a firm spokesperson said, “Like many firms in recent months, we are conducting a small and targeted restructuring in selected areas of the firm to manage costs and shape our size and capabilities to practice demand.”

“The purpose of this is to maintain our strong footing and further focus on investing in priority growth opportunities, whether in terms of practice area or geography, where client demand is greatest,” they continued.

As reported by Law.com, BCLP did not have a great 2023 financially, with both revenue and revenue per lawyer taking a hit.

BCLP posted a 0.6% decline in revenue in 2023 at $840 million and a 0.1% decline in RPL, as head count held roughly flat at 1,185 full-time equivalent attorneys. A 5.7% decline in equity partners helped push the firm’s profits per equity partner up slightly, with a 0.8% gain to $950,000.

Ten months ago, BCLP made its first set of layoffs — 47 business professionals were let go at that time.

Best of luck to those who are being let go from Bryan Cave.
