Paris appeals court orders damages for plaintiffs in breast implant scandal

The Paris Court of Appeal has ruled Thursday that German firm TUV Rheinland was negligent in providing customers with distorted safety certificates and must fully compensate their victims. There are about 2,700 victims who joined forces in this suit against TUV Rheinland, alleging that they suffered physical and mental issues due to their cheap silicone implants.

The implants used by TUV Rheinland in breast implants were never declared safe for human use. According to research done by the Britain NHS, implants are six times more likely to rupture compared to other implants on the market. Currently, there are about 47,000 people fitted with the PIP implants from TUB Rheinland.

TUV Rheinland has declared bankruptcy after the scandal about its cheap silicone implants became viral in 2010. The founder Jean-Claude Mas was jailed for four years and fined more than 75,000 euros because of the bankruptcy in 2013. PIPA, the organization for victims suffering from PIP implants, has stated that the damages for each plaintiff would be around 20,000 to 70,000.
