North Carolina sheriff to pay $3M settlement in fatal shooting of black man

A North Carolina sheriff’s office Monday announced it will pay a $3 million settlement to settle a case brought by the family of a Black man who was fatally shot by police.

The family of Andrew Brown Jr. filed a federal lawsuit in July of 2021 seeking $30 million against Pasquotank Sheriff Tommy Wooten and deputies. Brown was killed on April 21 2021 when Pasquotank County Sheriff’s deputies fired shots into his vehicle. The deputies were trying to serve Brown with an arrest warrant for drug-related charges.

Brown allegedly tried to flee the scene. District Attorney Andrew Womble stated that Brown used his car as a “deadly weapon,” which lead deputies to believe that the use of force was warranted. Body camera footage of the incident were privately shown to the family but has yet been publicly released.

Wooten said in a video statement following the incident in 2021 “This tragic incident was quick and over in less than 30 seconds, and body cameras are shaky and sometimes hard to decipher. They only tell part of the story.”

The attorney for Brown’s family said “While no settlement could ever fill the hole his death left in their hearts, this agreement is about providing for [Brown’s] children’s futures.”
