From Fudging The Numbers To Just Deserts

Know what's worse than a lawyer who's bad with numbers? A bookkeeper that's unethical with them.

Biglaw-bonus-money-lawyer-associate-woman-female-cash-raining-1Few things bind lawyers together more than a penchant for arguing over definitions and an irrational frustration with the Rule Against Perpetuities. One of those things is a general aversion to math. Speaking for myself, numbers above 13 make me break out in a cold sweat. That’s why I totally understand why a firm would want to delegate its calculating to a bookkeeper. What I don’t get is why a bookkeeper would do something illegal around people whose entire job centers around knowing the law.

According to WJAC, authorities with the Altoona Police Department said a Blair County man is facing embezzlement charges after being accused of stealing hundreds of thousands of dollars from a law firm.

According to the news outlet, Adam Bush, 41, of Hollidaysburg, allegedly embezzled $380,000 from the accounts of the Goldstein & Heslop Law Firm, over the course of a 3-year period, where he was employed as a bookkeeper.

This is what happens when you work for and around people who know a thing or two about Crim. Mr. Bush is being charged with a slew of felonies including but not limited to forgery, theft, and access device fraud. Hopefully he squirreled away a bit of that cash to afford a legal representative.

Have you spent enough time at a law firm to realize that lawyering and or embezzlement aren’t for you? This might be a good time to remember that many people have made a pivot from languishing at a law firm to living the life. I’d much rather write a story about the next Eli Castro than the next…uhh, Adam Bush.
