Jail Deaths Increased 33% Over Past Two Decades: BJS

The Crime Report

Jail deaths increased 33 percent between 2001-2019, with suicide the leading cause, according to the Bureau of Justice Statistics (BJS). Over 77 percent of the inmates who died in 2019 were still awaiting trial. But BJS also noted that from 2000 to 2019, an average 81 percent of jail jurisdictions in the U.S. reported no deaths during the calendar year.

Publishers sue Shopify for alleged copyright and trademark violations

Five major publishing companies have filed a lawsuit against Shopify over pirated learning materials like PDFs of ebooks and test materials. Macmillan Learning, Cengage Learning, Elsevier, McGraw Hill and Pearson Education allege that the e-commerce platform failed to remove listings and stores that violate each publishers’ trademarks and copyrights.
