Australia bill asks government to take in 150 refugees held off Nauru and Papua New Guinea

The Australian Greens party Monday introduced a bill to parliament asking the government to take in 150 refugees living in Nauru and Papua New Guinea (PNG), who have been there for a decade seeking asylum in Australia. “After ten long years of offshore detention it is abhorrent that about 150 people remain exiled in PNG and Nauru,” Greens Immigration spokesperson Senator Nick McKim said in a statement.

A Human Rights Watch (HRW) report Sunday criticized Australia’s inaction since the military junta took over Myanmar in a military coup two years ago. According to the report, Australia has yet to impose sanctions on the junta in response to their human rights violations. HRW accuses the junta of being in violation of international humanitarian law and of committing war crimes as well as crimes against humanity.

Ecuadorians Sunday voted in local elections and a referendum containing a number of measures aimed at reforming Ecuador’s constitution. As of Monday night, all eight referendum measures have been defeated. President Guillermo Lasso proposed the referendum in September 2022.
