Advocates say the amendments are needed to strip antiquated language from state constitutions and to potentially transform the criminal justice system by making all work in prisons voluntary, reports Pew Stateline.

Over 160 organizations Monday sent a letter to Secretary of the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) Alejandro Mayorkas calling for the end of religious discrimination against Sikh migrants at US border crossing points. The letter was signed by the Sikh Coalition, the American Civil Liberties Union of Arizona (ACLU-AZ) and the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU), among other organizations.

County’s largest jail, crashed over the weekend, causing an unknown number of people to be kept behind bars for days longer than they should have been, reports the Los Angeles Times. South Carolina Gov. Henry McMaster has signed a sweeping law enforcement reform law that creates new standards for training, conduct and accreditation of its law enforcement, reports The State. The law, which went into effect July 1, requires that all law enforcement agencies in South Carolina become accredited or meet equivalent minimum standards. At present, just 51 of the 335 agencies in the state are fully accredited.

California Gov. Gavin Newsom has vetoed legislation that would have allowed some California cities to open supervised drug-injection sites as part of a pilot program to combat fatal overdoses, reports the New York Times. Newsom voiced concern about “a world of unintended consequences” that could result from authorizing an unlimited number of sites. He directed the state’s secretary of health and human services to work with local leaders to set statewide operating standards for such facilities.
