This will be the third straight commencement ceremony held virtually due to the global COVID-19 pandemic. The Higher People’s Court of Liaoning (“appellate court”) in China on Tuesday upheld Canadian citizen Robert Lloyd Schellenberg’s death sentence for methamphetamine smuggling. Initially, the Dalian Intermediate People’s Court sentenced Schellenberg to 15 years in prison for smuggling drugs. On Schellenberg’s appeal, the appellate court remanded the case for retrial concluding that the punishment was improper.

IPCC releases report on climate change, warns of severe consequences for inaction

The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change ( IPCC ) released its preliminary report on the causes and effects of climate change on Monday. The report shows “unequivocally” that human action is the cause of climate change, and that the effects are direr than previously thought. The IPCC said that limiting global warming to “2ºC will be beyond reach” in the 21st century unless rapid and immediate action is taken to steeply reduce the production of CO 2 and other greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions.

Postmates agreed to pay more than 1,500 Seattle gig workers almost a million dollars over the company’s violations of the city’s Paid Sick and Safe Time Ordinance (PSST), according to a statement by the city’s Office of Labor Standards (OLS). Seattle established this ordinance in July 2020 as part of its response to the pandemic. The Central Government of India introduced Monday a bill that would empower state governments to specify socially and educationally backward classes (SEBCs) in the Lok Sabha (House of the People). The Constitution (One Hundred and Twenty-Seventh Amendment) Bill, 2021 proposes to amend Article 342A of the Constitution of India, which gives the power to specify SEBCs in a particular state to the president of India and also gives the parliament the power to list SEBCs.

As we wrote several months ago , the Nationwide EAS test is scheduled for tomorrow, August 11, 2021 at 2:20 pm ET , with “day of test” information to be filed with the FCC on ETRS Form Two by August 12. The FCC issued a reminder last week, and FEMA sent an announcement of the test out yesterday, so do a last check of your equipment to be sure that you are ready to receive the test when it comes your way (or to report on any failure if for any reason it does not arrive as expected).
