Goodwin's Chair Steps Down During Time Of Transition For Firm

He led the firm through good times and bad, and now it's time to say goodbye.

goodbye lawyerBiglaw firm Goodwin Procter has been through the wringer recently. After growing its revenue by about 30% amid a hiring frenzy in 2021, its profitability took a plunge in the tail end of 2022 thanks to the tech sector’s implosion. The work slowdown in M&A spelled trouble, and the firm conducted a round of layoffs at the start of the new year. Now, the man who oversaw it all plans to step down from his position.

Robert Insolia, who has served as chair of Goodwin Procter since 2019 (and as managing partner for seven years before that), is leaving his leadership role. The firm has selected Anthony McCusker, co-chair of Goodwin’s technology practice, to step into Insolia’s shoes.

“Goodwin’s success has been driven by relentlessly focusing on our strategy and our culture, and the partnership overwhelmingly feels Anthony is the right person to carry this torch forward,” Insolia said of his successor in a statement,

As noted by the American Lawyer, McCusker spent more than 13 years at Gunderson before he joined Goodwin in 2010. He’s served as a leader throughout his time at the firm, having spent time as chairman of the firm’s Silicon Valley office, as well as serving on both the firm’s executive and allocations committees. McCusker offered praise for his predecessor, as well as some hopes for the future in a statement.

“Our client-centric strategy and our global platform are differentiated as much by the unique mix of market-moving industries they cover, as by our deep understanding of these industries, and the growing convergence among them. Rob has done an outstanding job building on the Goodwin promise to both our clients and our people, and I look forward to continuing with this build—along with all of us at the firm—in my role as chair.”

Best of luck to McCusker in his new role, and congratulations to Insolia on leading the firm through great successes over the years while offering a steady hand during rough times.
