Amazon employees at New York warehouse become first in the country to unionize

Amazon employees at a warehouse facility in Staten Island, New York, voted Friday to form the first Amazon union in the United States by joining the Amazon Labor Union (ALU). A group of former and current warehouse employees established the ALU in April 2021, with former employee Christian Smalls as the president. A total of 4,785 votes were cast, and 2,654 votes voted to unionize while 2,131 voted against it.

Two UN human rights experts, Fernand de Varennes and Ahmed Shaheed, Friday urged Saudi Arabia to abide by their non-refoulement obligations under international law and refrain from extraditing two Chinese nationals belonging to the Uyghur minority. The two individuals in detention in Saudi Arabia are Nuermaimaiti Ruze and Waili Aimidoula. Fearing arbitrary detention, torture and ill-treatment, they fled from China’s Xinjiang Autonomous Region to Turkey in 2016.

Indonesia court sentences teacher to death for raping 13 students

The Bandung High Court Monday sentenced a teacher, Herry Wirawan, to death for raping 13 students at an Islamic boarding school. The victims were between 12 and 16 years old. It was further found that he impregnated at least eight of the victims. The Bandung District Court had earlier sentenced him to life imprisonment, but the prosecution was not satisfied with the punishment and filed an appeal to the High Court.
