US charges three men in Iran-backed assassination attempt of prominent critic

In a sealed indictment, the US Attorney General Friday charged three men in connection with an alleged assassination attempt of a well-known critic of Iran’s government on US soil. Rafat Amirov, Polad Omarov and Khalid Mehdiyev face three federal charges: murder for hire, conspiracy to commit murder for hire and money laundering conspiracy. The charges carry a maximum combined sentence of 40 years imprisonment.

Sri Lanka President suspends parliament until February 8

A gazette notification issued Friday by the Sri Lankan President’s secretary announced that President Ranil Wickremesinghe has suspended parliament until February 8, when he is to announce new long-term policies to address various issues. Delhi High Court reduces interim bail period of former BJP leader Kuldeep Singh Sengar in rape case

The Delhi High Court Friday reduced the period of interim bail for former Bharatiya Janata Party leader Kuldeep Singh Sengar, convicted of rape, in light of the safety concerns raised by the victim. A division bench of the Delhi High Court led by Justice Mukta Gupta modified an earlier order dated January 16 by which the court had granted Sengar interim bail for a period of 15 days–from January 27 to February 10–to allow him to attend his daughter’s wedding.
