ACLU challenges Indiana bail law under First Amendment, equal protection

The American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) of Indiana Wednesday challenged a new Indiana bail law in US district court. The ACLU claims that the new law places unconstitutional limitations on charitable bail organizations’ ability to pay bail in violation of organizations’ First Amendment and equal protection rights. The lawsuit references organizations like The Bail Project , a non-profit organization with which the ACLU of Indiana partners to provide cash bail to criminal defendants.

A Spanish judge Thursday ordered the release of pro-Russian Ukrainian blogger Anatoly Shary but forbade him from leaving the country pending an extradition hearing. Shary was arrested in Tarragona, where he has resided since 2019, by Spain’s National Police Corps at the request of Ukraine’s Security Service (SBU). Judge Jose Luis Calama of Spain’s Audencia Nacional released Shary at the request of Spain’s Prosecution Ministry.

UN chief António Guterres Thursday expressed his support for an African country to be given a permanent seat on the UN Security Council (UNSC). He admitted that Africa as a continent was underrepresented when it came to international matters and thus it would be only fair for an African country to have a permanent seat in the council.
