Alleged Colorado Springs LGBTQ nightclub shooter will be held without bond, police report

The Colorado Springs Police Department Monday announced that the arrest warrant for alleged shooter Anderson Lee Aldrich is sealed, and formal charges will be filed in the coming weeks. Aldrich allegedly carried out a mass shooting at LGBTQ Colorado nightclub Club Q on Saturday night, killing five people. District Attorney Michael Allen said Aldrich will appear in court for the first time via video from jail and will be held without bond after being released from the hospital.

At press conference, US Attorney for the District of Colorado Cole Finnegan said, “We are committed to bringing justice to the people who suffered in this instance. We pledge on behalf of our office and the Department of Justice that we will work as hard as we can.” Colorado Springs Mayor John Suthers released a statement saying, “We know one or more patrons heroically intervened to subdue the suspect, and we praise those individuals who did so because their actions saved lives.”

Aldrich was previously arrested and charged in 2021 with two counts of felony menacing and three counts of first-degree kidnapping. According to the El Paso County Sherriff’s Office, Aldrich’s mother alleged that Aldrich threatened her with weapons and a bomb. The charges were later dropped.

In 2019, Colorado passed a “red flag law” meant to allow an individuals’ family members to contact a court for a temporary “extreme risk protection order” if it is established that the person poses a significant risk of harm if they have a firearm. Critics have questioned whether the red flag law failed to prevent this tragedy.
