The hearing is an essential first step towards fulfilling a provision from an old treaty, known as the Treaty of New Echota , that led to the Cherokee Nation’s forced removal from their ancestral lands.

Canada Wednesday imposed a new round of sanctions against the Iranian regime. The new sanctions add two weapons manufacturing companies and six individuals to the list of regime supporters sanctioned under Canada’s Special Economic Measures (Iran) Regulations. This is the fifth round of sanctions Canada has imposed against the Iranian regime this year.

Pakistan authorities Wednesday announced that the previously-banned film “Joyland” has been cleared for release. “Joyland” follows the love story between a young man and a transgender actress. On November 11, authorities announced that “Joyland” was not certified for release due to “highly objectionable material” that does not conform “with the social and moral standards” of Pakistan.

The public prosecutor carried out the death sentences of four Kuwaitis, one Syrian national, one Pakistani national and one Ethiopian national at Kuwait’s Central Prison. A Georgia state judge Tuesday overturned Georgia’s Living Infants Fairness and Equality (LIFE) Act , also known as the Heartbeat Bill, ruling it unconstitutional from the time it was drafted. Judge Robert C.I. McBurney found that two sections of the LIFE Act were void because of this. The sections at issue criminalized abortions once a fetus had a detectable heartbeat–which typically happens six weeks into a pregnancy.

Growing up, I was an odd kid. I had a Commodore 64 computer on which I tried to make a zombie apocalypses game. I received good grades in school and generally stayed out of trouble. However, I grew up in Brownsville, Brooklyn, the murder capital of New York City. Odds were seven out of 10 going to prison, one out of 5 being murdered. My mother raised me with the belief that education was the way to beat those odds.
