Scotland court rejects case seeking independence vote without UK approval

Scotland’s Court of Session dismissed a case Friday suggesting that Scotland could hold another independence referendum without the approval of the UK. The case, brought by Martin Keatings, a staunch advocate for Scottish independence, was a long-shot effort to overturn the 2014 referendum, when Scots voted to stay in the UK by a 55-percent majority.

This will be the second straight commencement ceremony held virtually due to the global COVID-19 pandemic. Just over 5 months ago graduation was held virtually as well and 103 paralegal credentials were conferred.

Amazon employees begin vote to unionize at Alabama facility

The National Labor Relations Board (NLRB) denied Friday Amazon’s effort to limit mail voting in its Alabama union representation election, allowing 6,000 employees to begin voting Monday on whether to unionize. In November 2020, the Retail, Wholesale, and Department Store Union (RWDSU) filed for an election at the Bessemer, Alabama Amazon fulfillment center, which has about 6,200 hourly employees.

Former Ohio police officer Adam Coy pleaded not guilty Friday to the killing of Andre Hill, an unarmed Black man. On December 22, Coy and another officer were responding to a nuisance call about car noise. As Coy approached the area where the vehicle was located, he encountered Andre Hill. Even though Hill was unarmed, Coy believed his cellphone was a weapon and fired at Hill, striking him four times.
