For her entire life, Navy Joan Roberts has been “she who must not be named.” There is no evidence that her father has ever visited her, let alone held her. Her grandparents repeatedly denied her existence and said that they had only “four granddaughters.” They even gave their dogs stockings at Christmas rather than Navy, who never even bit one let alone a score of Secret Service agents. As even Democrats began to voice their own shock at the cruelty of the First Couple shunning this child, the Bidens finally relented and recognized her existence, but only barely so. They now admit that they have seven grandchildren and five (not four) granddaughters.
Pressed by Fox News, the White House issued this statement:
“Our son Hunter and Navy’s mother, Lunden, are working together to foster a relationship that is in the best interests of their daughter, preserving her privacy as much as possible going forward. This is not a political issue, it’s a family matter. Jill and I only want what is best for all of our grandchildren, including Navy.”
Even for those of us who merely followed this saga from the beginning, the statement was maddening and frankly insulting. It suggested that there was some reason, until now, that prevented the Bidens from acknowledging the existence of their fifth granddaughter. The suggestion was pushed further by CNN, which cited the resolution of “a protracted and bitter court proceeding over child support.” That is false. There was no legal, or even tactical, reason for the refusal of the First Couple to acknowledge Navy for four years.
Navy and her mother sought that recognition and the Bidens refused. How was that in the “best interests” of this child? Were they fostering a relationship when they gave the German Shepherds stockings at Christmas but not their grandchild?
Moreover, Hunter has not been “working together” with Lunden for the best interests of his daughter. He has been a callous cad throughout this process, consistently putting his own interests ahead of his child.
Hunter refused to admit that he was Navy’s father for years until forced to accept the results of a court-ordered DNA test. He then fought child support and even her use of the name Biden. He was threatened repeatedly with contempt of court over his obstruction in the litigation in Arkansas. The statement that he has been working together with Lunden is insulting to anyone who has followed these court proceedings, let alone their granddaughter.
In June, Hunter settled the Arkansas child support case on the condition that Lunden agreed to withdraw her request to change their child’s last name to “Biden.”
Washington is a hard town. I have lived and worked here for decades and I am still amazed by the cold calculations of many in this city. Long-standing values and associations are routinely jettisoned for personal advantage. Here the moral strictures of the rest of the nation are flipped; vice is a virtue and integrity is a weakness.
Yet, even in this place of utter personal corruption, the Bidens shocked the local population. It was not their millions in influence peddling. The Bidens are standouts but hardly unique in that form of corruption. It is not the President’s obvious lies about his knowledge and ties to his son’s foreign dealings. Truth is as relative in Washington as loyalty in this city. However, few have the stomach for how the Bidens treated this little girl. The Bidens spent more time fretting over the “pressure” of the White House on Major and Commander than they did the emotional impact on a four-year-old child who was prevented from even calling herself a Biden.
So what changed after four years to compel this passing recognition in a press statement? It was not the litigation. There was never any legal reason not to recognize their granddaughter since it was confirmed by DNA and court order. It was not any sudden request of the child or her mother. They have been asking for years for such recognition.
It was more likely the disgust expressed even by Democrats that this is simply wrong. The President is about to head out on the campaign trail and had no answer to that objection. In other words, for the First Couple, it is a political not a family matter. If it were the latter, they would have done the decent thing years ago.
Of course, the President cannot go into his loving account of how his granddaughter is “a talker” and playful (like his German Shepherd) because he has never bothered to meet her.
That is now a matter for this little girl to contemplate as she gets older. However, whatever the impetus of the sudden recognition of Navy’s existence, it was not any legal cause. The First Couple was free to do the decent thing at any time over the last four years. They simply did not find it in their “best interest” to do so.

Shakdi, I don’t think Hunter should ever have access to the child unattended until and unless he gets sober, and corrects his course of self destruction. I don’t think he should be alone with the kids in his own home, for the same reason. Addicts who are not in a strong recovery are just not in any position to be responsible for children.

Here’s the thing. If a parents child grown up, starts making egregious mistakes like disowning a family member for no reason, the parent should step in and show the errant child how to act right.

Jonathan: Some in the media are now calling DJT’s recent behavior the desperate acts of a “Mob boss”–threats against prosecutors, pretty open calls for violence, attempts to intimidate judges and witnesses. It all fits a pattern of a Mob boss who is facing criminal prosecution.
This morning I was reading Jack Smith’s superseding indictment that now includes Carlos DeOliveira as a named defendant. The indictment of DeO, Trump’s Mar-a-Lago property manager, alleges he was part of the conspiracy by Trump and Nauta to delete or destroy the security footage that showed the movement of boxes of classified material around the property to hide it from federal authorities.
What caught my eye was what appears at page 31, paragraph 91 of the superseding indictment. It states: “…on August 26, 2022, Nauta called Trump Employee 5 and said words to the effect of ‘someone just wants to to make sure Carlos is good’. In response, Trump Employee 5 told Nauta that De Oliveira was loyal and that De Oliveira would not do anything to effect his relationship with Trump. That same day, at Nauta’s request, Trump Employee 5 confirmed in a Signal chat group with Nauta and the PAC Representative [Trump’s Save America PAC] that De Oliveira was loyal. That same day, Trump called De Oliveira and told De Oliveira that Trump would get De Oliveira an attorney”. Sounds like something right out a Mob crime movie doesn’t it?
We know Trump’s PAC is paying the legal fees of Walt Nauta, his co-defendant, that has set aside $20 million for legal fees. And if DeO remains “loyal” Trump will do the same for him. So far Nauta has remained “loyal” and there is no indication he is about to flip on his boss. On the other hand, DeO is in a different position. He is not part of DJT’s inner circle. He is a low-level Mar-a-Lago employee who, unfortunately, got caught up in DJT’s conspiracy to obstruct. A friend of DeO’s family says “the family feels like he got trapped”.
At his arraignment on Monday DeO will be told he faces charges that could result in a prison sentence of from 5 to 20 years. Faced with that prospect what is DeO’s incentive to remain “loyal” to Trump? Mark Meadows realized there was no reason to remain “loyal” to his former boss and now is apparently a cooperating witness in Jack Smith’s investigation. Jack Smith hopes DeO will do the same. Tell the truth and avoid a long prison sentence.
Now the Q you have to ask yourself is this. If you were served with a subpoena to produce some of your business records how would you respond? You would get an attorney and comply with the subpoena. That’s what any other former president would do. Biden and Pence didn’t even wait for a subpoena for the top secret docs they had in their possession. They immediately turned them over to the government. But that’s not how a Mob boss thinks. He thinks he can escape accountability by hiding documents and destroying evidence of his crimes. DJT is going to find out otherwise.

I am concerned about the little girl’s state of mind years from now when she can comprehend how much of a loser her father was, and how repugnant the Biden family is. Absolutely the media is – and has been incredibly biased in the way it deals with those it favors vs. those it disfavors – in straight news and that has been true my entire lifetime – though it is worse today.
Often that is political – btu the real driving issue is not politics but that Journalists near universally tilt their language to express their biases – even in straight news.
You are correct that mentioning Lunden’s past is only reasonable if Hunter’s is also always mentioned.
But these problems are much broader. The use of the word alleged – when something is alleged and when it is assumed true and when credible allegations are completely omitted by journalists is powerful evidence of biases – political and otherwise.
It is not untruthful to say that X is alleged to have done Y – if there is a credible allegation made.
But it is Biased to say X is alleged to have done Y, when that is not mentioned in reference to W – who has also done Y.
Again my focus – while agreeing with your post, is on Joe Biden.

Amazingly – those ont he left have agreed – they not only AREN’T liberal the are openly critical of liberalism, and with few exceptions do not use the term.

A liberal is someone who places a very high value on individual liberty.
When Push comes to shove – I do not think most 20th century liberals – including Derschowitz and Turley are actual liberals.
Their near absolute position on SOME civil liberties – such as free speech is NOT reflected in their support for other government actions that ultimately come at the expense of our liberty.
But democrats today do not even pretend to value individual liberty – and certainly not free speech.
They are not liberal even in the weakest form.
And they are completely at odds to even the weak liberalism of 2th century liberals like Turley and Derschowitz.
Dennis: thank you for this post. IMHO, Turley not only sunk low as a human being with this post, but he crossed a line professionally. Paternity matters in most, if not all, states are sealed –to protect the child against the judgmental attitudes of self-righteous people like some who post on this blog. Turley not only parades out this child and gives out her actual name, but uses the unfortunate circumstances of her conception and disputes between her parents over child support and other private matters for political purposes–as an attack against our President. At one time, using the children of a POTUS as an attack against their parent was considered off-limits–and for good reasons. It’s not fair for a child to be drug into the spotlight and to become an object of cricitism or public scorn over the conduct of lthe adults of his/her family. IMHO, Turley’s use of this child as a political weapon against Joe Biden (who isn’t even her father) may well constitute a violation of the Rules of Professional Conduct because it reflects adversely on the practice of law to violate the rule requiring paternity matters to be confidential. Turley isn’t just some cynical paid pundit like Hannity and Levin. He holds himself out as a “law professor” and expert on “constitutional law”, and, IMHO, if you’re going to sell yourself as a legal expert, you should be bound by the Rules of Professional Conduct. Turley has the arrogance to claim: “However, few have the stomach for how the Bidens treated this little girl. The Bidens spent more time fretting over the “pressure” of the White House on Major and Commander than they did the emotional impact on a four-year-old child who was prevented from even calling herself a Biden.” No decent person would have the stomach to conscience a “law professor” and “constitutional scholar” stooping to the depths Turley has to not only out an illegitimate child, but also to accuse her grandfather of crimes knowing there is NO proof. (see below). Turley doesn’t know what’s going on in the Biden family, but pretends to know that Joe and Jill Biden value their dog more than this child.
Turley has the hypocritical gall to say: “Washington is a hard town. I have lived and worked here for decades and I am still amazed by the cold calculations of many in this city.” There’s nothing more coldly calculating than using an illegitimate child as a political cudgel, which is what he has done, and this is beneath someone pretending to be an expert in the law.
To top it off, Turley claims: “Yet, even in this place of utter personal corruption, the Bidens shocked the local population. It was not their millions in influence peddling. The Bidens are standouts but hardly unique in that form of corruption. It is not the President’s obvious lies about his knowledge and ties to his son’s foreign dealings.” As has been repeated many times, NO “influence peddling” has been PROVEN–no “follow the money trail” has been established despite years of investigation. And, “influence peddling” is not illegal. According to Lev Parnas, an associate of Rudy Giuliani, there was NO “influence peddling”. Republicans KNOW this, but keep harping on the laptop because it’s all they have. And, the disciples lap it up. Turley’s prior posts claim “influence peddling” based on laptop messages dated when Biden wasn’t even in office–so how could Joe Biden peddle “influence” when he wasn’t in any political office? Hunter’s posts may be nothing than puffing the goods, and despite multiple investigations, nothing has been proven. But, Turley speaks as if it is PROVEN–which it isn’t. He also calls our President a liar–but where’s the proof?

Journalists have been asking Joe Biden about little Navy for a long time. Whyever would you select Jonathan Turley to blame for making it public that the Biden family fought tooth and nail against recognizing little Navy as being part of their family?
Hunter Biden refused to accept he was the father, refused to accept the results of the DNA test, fought against paying child support for the little girl he’d created, fought the amount of child support he was court ordered to pay, and Joe Biden has publicly refused to acknowledge that Navy exists as his granddaughter, even giving his German Shepherds a Christmas stocking instead of her.

When the president of the United States goes on and on about how devoted he is to family, and how he’ll stand by his drug addict son no matter what, and it comes out that he’s totally rejected the little girl that drug addict son created, then it’s news.
Joe Biden has that practiced, smooth, toothy smile, and that chuckle, to portray the devoted family man. It’s just an act to hide the ugly grift, pay to play, bribery, and other money making schemes. It’s already been proven that the email when he threatened a Chinese partner to pay up because his father was standing right beside him, occurred on a day when Hunter was in the White House, and Joe was VP. Later that day, he was photographed driving Joe’s corvette, with a couple of women. The Burisma pay to play scheme happened when Joe was VP.

JT has always sought the limelight because his views on constitutional interpretation views are at the margins. Most constitutional scholars don’t treat him seriously. When Rupert Murdock offered him a job as Fox’s “legal analyst” JT jumped at the chance to get his views out in the public domain. He must get a generous paycheck because he consistently follows the Fox talking point of the day…a lot of conspiracy theories and other misinformation.
