Turley to Speak on Free Speech in Idaho

I have the pleasure of speaking this week on my forthcoming book, The Indispensable Right: Free Speech in the Age of Rage. I will be addressing the Sun Valley Policy Forum in Ketchum, Idaho on Tuesday.

I am delighted to return to Idaho, which has long been one of my favorite places as a hiker and a backpacker. The state is breathtakingly beautiful and I hope to have one day to get into the mountains to enjoy the natural splendors.

I should have some good pictures to share on the travel blog!

  1. Jonathan: Off to Ketchum, Idaho on your book tour? Great and beautiful place for hiking and backpacking! But Ketchum? I can think of a lot of other places you could better promote your book. Amazon is the biggest bookseller in the country. It lists Seattle, Portland, Las Vegas, Tucson, Was. D.C., Austin, TX, San Fran, Albuquerque, Denver and Louisville as the “most well-read”. Chicago is also on the list. What a great place to promote your book–a kind of homecoming for a boy born and raised in the windy city Then there is NY, the center of the publishing world. I think you need to talk to your publisher.

Only one problem. The cities listed above are not exactly the centers of “conservative” thinking. They are bastions of “liberal” thought. All voted for Biden in 2020. An interesting dichotomy that the “most well-read” happen to be the most “liberal”. Of course, I can understand why you were invited to Ketchum. Idaho is DJT country! He won the Idaho GOP caucus–taking all 32 delegates. So I suppose you go where you are invited.

And thanks for providing a link to “the Argyros” site. Kind of revealing. It indicates the “Evening with Jonathan Turley” is not free. General admission is $120. And there is a “VIP Package” for $2,500 that offers invitees a “private dinner” with you. Sorry, but I will have to pass on that one. That is way above my pay grade. Besides, paying $2,500 to have a conversation with you isn’t my idea of “free speech”.

Then, in your bio on the Argyros site it indicates you “appear regularly” in the NY Times, Washington Post, USA Today, LA Times and WSJ. Except maybe for the WJS, owned by your employer Rupert Murdock, I can’t recall anytime you have appeared “regularly” in the other publications. Maybe I missed something. Oh well, I get it. Bios are intended to burnish our credentials. But in the interests of full disclosure wouldn’t it be better to say you “appear regularly” in the Hill, Fox and the NY Post?

Anyway, enjoy Ketchum–the hiking and enjoying a dinner with those who can afford $2,500. In your next post no doubt you will provide pics of your hiking around Ketchum. Why not also provide the speech you gave to the invitees? Now that that would be interesting.

    1. Debating brainwashed Democrats is impossible.
They must be mocked and ridiculed instead.
Ridicule is our most potent weapon against the brainwashed Left.
      Dennis here provides endless opportunities.

      1. Denis probably spends most of his time in his basement talking to a life-sized cardboard picture of Professor Turley. He’ll never get the help he needs.

      2. Anonimouse: Seems you think mockery and ridicule is the “most potent weapon against the brainwashed Left”. Unfortunately, the MAGA Republicans and DJT don’t know how to employ it effectively. DJT hates mockery, ridicule or satire when directed at him. He attended only one WH Correspondent’s Dinner where he got mocked by Pres. Obama. You have to have a sense of humor and a thick skin to put up with that kind of stuff. DJT has neither. Despite all his bravado he is basically insecure–so he engages in vicious and personal attacks on those he consider his “enemies”. Now if Turley was so “desired” why did he choose Ketchum, Idaho? With his reputation as a constitutional legal scholar you would think he would be “desired” at big venues and universities. People would flock to see him.

Book publishers want authors to get out and promote their latest book. One way these days is to appear on a late night TV shows. So why doesn’t Turley appear on one of those shows–like Seth Meyers “Late Night” show on NBC? Meyers often brings on authors to talk about their latest book that gets public attention you can’t find in Ketchum, Idaho. I think there is a reason you won’t see Turley on Meyer’s show. In a recent show Meyers ridiculed and mocked DJT: “In a recent Truth social post Trump referred to himself as ‘Honest Don'”. Meyers went on: “At this point I’ve got to believe that even he is being sarcastic”. Get it? A reference to all the vitriolic and vial things DJT says about judges and prosecutors but then claims he was only being “sarcastic”. DJT wouldn’t know “sarcasm” if it bit him on the ankle! So no. Turley won’t appear on Meyers for a simple reason. Besides not wanting to sit in the “green” room and listen to Meyers mock the guy he stands up for every day, Turley doesn’t want to be mocked himself by Meyers about his new book!

Bottom line. I think Turley knows his books have limited appeal–to a very narrow conservative audience. He doesn’t care whether his books sell in NY or Chicago or San Francisco. He would be happy to sell just a few thousand copies–to people like you and the other true believers. By the way, how many copies of Turley’s new book have you ordered for yourself, family and friends?

Finally, why would I be “envious” of Turley? He has had a successful legal and teaching career he worked hard to get. I applaud him for that. I too worked hard for what I have–and through prudent investments I can now live a comfortable life. What in the world do I have to envious about?

        1. Dennis says: “He attended only one WH Correspondent’s Dinner where he got mocked by Pres. Obama. You have to have a sense of humor and a thick skin to put up with that kind of stuff.”

Actually, it is Obama who cannot stand the heat of being mocked, but yes Trump sat through that nonsense with a sense of humor. And the best part? Donald Trump ran for president, against Hillary, against all odds… and….surprise surprise….Trump won. That was THE BEST DAY EVER for so much of America. Wasn’t it, Denny?

October 2016: “President Barack Obama appeared on Jimmy Kimmel Live and read a series of Mean Tweets, including one from Republican nominee Donald Trump:

“Obama will go down as perhaps the worst president in the history of the United States — @RealDonaldtrump,” Obama read, quoting the GOP presidential hopeful.

“Well, @RealDonaldTrump, at least I will go down as a president,” Obama quipped.”

Haha. LOL. Let’s do it again: Trump 45-47….!

        2. Denny asks: “So why doesn’t Turley appear on one of those shows–like Seth Meyers “Late Night” show on NBC?”

Because, like, nobody watches those shows. Duh.

        3. Denny’s bottom line: “I think Turley knows his books have limited appeal–to a very narrow conservative audience.”

Honey, you have no idea how HUGE that “very narrow conservative audience” actually is. LOL.

        4. Dennis wraps up, sincerely asking: “Finally, why would I be “envious” of Turley? He has had a successful legal and teaching career he worked hard to get. I applaud him for that.”

Yes, Turley is hugely successful and well respected. But Denny, honey, nobody asked if you were “envious” of Turley.

A comment was stated thusly: Brainwashed Dems, like you Den Den, should be ridiculed and mocked relentlessly, because it is a powerful political weapon. And YOU provide endless opportunities for mockery and ridicule. Just LOL. You are a hoot, Denny.

          1. *Nobody asked, nobody suggested you might be ‘envious’ of Turley.
Because why would anyone even suggest that? LOL. I mean, really. Haha.

            1. Ok, I see other Anonimouse’s did suggest your criticisms of Turley are due in part to Turley envy. I don’t see it as an ‘envy up, scorn down’ rivalry. I see it as inherent, built-in, automatic antipathy toward anyone who Dennis perceives as defending Trump in any way. It does not compute in his TDS brain as ‘valid’ or as ‘neutral opinion.’ Instead, anyone perceived as defending You Know Who generates an automated reaction like Robbie the Robot in the show Lost in Space: “Danger! Danger Will Robinson!” The Trump-related data input computes in Denny’s brain as a seek-and-destroy algorithmic programming: ‘You are my enemy on the wrong side of history and everything else therefore I must launch personal attacks to destroy you.’ Something like that. As distinct from personal envy. LOL.

        5. And finally, Dennis, Trump is not vicious in his political attacks; he is hilarious.
But the lefties actually are vicious. The left wing media actually is brutal. Obama/Biden are vicious against Trump. And not only viciousness directed at the candidate, Trump, but also vicious, nasty personal attacks on his family, on Melania, on son Barron, on his other adult children. The Democrat/media complex is nasty day in and day out — and no one calls them out for any of it. That is a fact.

          1. Not only are Trump’s attacks funny, but they are true.
Biden’s political attacks are neither funny, nor honest; they are vicious lies. That is Biden’s signature: nastiness.

    2. Turley won’t waste his time responding to your weak posting. First, if your thoughts were ever desired enough by the public to write a book and then show up for book signings, you would know that it is nothing more than a token appearance, not one to elevate the volume of books you sell. You see, you narrow minded nobody, Turley, as a very desired writer to follow by so many of us out here, we could care less if he showed up in a town of 200 citizens, or a red state or a blue state. it just doesn’t matter. his sales would neither increase or decrease if he showed up in Montana or NYC. Those that enjoy his works BUY HIS BOOKS. I’ve yet to say to myself, geez, if he would only have MORE book signings in more populated places, I MIGHT BUY HIS BOOK. Oh, and your life must be so completely full that you actually sit around to see when and where Turley “regularly” appears. that, by itself, sures tells us much too much about you. And I just love people like you that are so envious of intelligent people’s success. your life must be so sad.

    3. Your smugness and arrogance screams Democrat, one of which who comes off as a spiteful and bitter little person…we are all more fortunate for not knowing you.

    4. Dennis McIntyre, I’ve read The New York Times for years & years. Jonathan Turley has never appeared, even once, to my (imperfect) memory. Certainly not ‘regularly’.

In grade school we would chant
      “Lier, lier
      Pant on firer.”

By the way, I live just 8 miles from the Idaho border.

      1. “. . . to my (imperfect) memory.”

More like fatally flawed. Ditto for the other publications.

    5. A libtard staffer must have written the bio. the only media they think exists is what was listed. oops.

    6. If $2,500 is above your pay grade, perhaps you, like most other “well-read” liberals are reading the wrong books.

PS, why go to a $hithole lib city and hike over feces and other liberal accoutrements? Ketchum is the most liberal place in ID where people can afford and appreciate a nice meal, moscow would be the other liberal place – full of tepid college profs that, like you, are well read and poorly educated and certainly cannot afford $2500.

    7. Dennis is jealous of your earned CV and balanced experience.
Please leave the Wood River Valley like it was in 1923!!!

  2. I happened to see a Fox News headline on my treadmill neighbor’s TV this morning that indicated that “SCOTUS justices appear skeptical about efforts to curb government controls on speech” or something similar. I may have gotten it wrong and I hope I did.

People often say things like “2A exists for when 1A doesn’t work” but, to my mind, that’s delusional. When you lose the right to speak, you lose the right to defend yourself and/or any other amendment. And when the government is allowed to control who is allowed to speak and what they are allowed to say, 1A is dead, and with it, arguably America’s entire raison d’etre.

I forget how many countries there are in the world that describe themselves as “free.” It’s in the hundreds. Mostly, it means freedom to do and say what the government wants you to do and say. I’m sure North Korea would describe itself as free. Brazil definitely does so, yet people are in jail right now for protesting what they believed to have been a stolen election by Lula. Even private social media messages can land you in jail.

The Covid thing that seems to be central to this case is particularly illuminating in that almost everything if not everything, that was deemed mis- or disinformation and thus, censored, at the time, has now proven to be true. The FDA now admits that they knew at the time of the rollout that the shots could in some cases lead to myocarditis, an irreversible heart condition, but they chose to hide it from the public “to prevent jab hesitancy.” If you were in the very low risk category for the virus, that information might well have influenced your decision. People had and still have a right to know.

I remember in this forum someone commenting “I have no idea what possible reason anyone would have for not getting the shots.” That’s the reason.

Yes, the whole Bill of Rights is peachy, but without the freedom to speak about it, and explain it, and argue about it, we have nothing, particularly in a nation whose IQ scores have long since been surpassed by their bowling scores. We have tyranny, and that’s what we increasingly do have.

The whole point of 1A ,and the Bill of Rights and the Constitution, was to “hamstring” the government. I understand that Justice Ketanji is doing what she believes the Biden Administration expects of her, which is, in itself, concerning. But she and the other Justices need to understand that history is watching.

Professor Turley often writes about 1A from the perspective of “stuff you can’t get fired for.” But the deeper issue is “stuff you’re simply not allowed to say.”

  3. Unfortunately, there’s still too much snow on the mountain trails right now for any hiking.

  4. enjoy the free air out there…. You are in a fascist country now…and on any given day may be jailed for your views!

  5. Enjoy Idaho, Professor. It is one of the most wonderful states!

BTW, I do hope the recent statements by Justice Jackson can find their rightful place in your forthcoming book and that it is not too late for some additions. One student publication at Cornell University has captured it perfectly:

    “The Babbling Bear
    Ketanji Brown Jackson Law School

    March 24
As a definitive statement of our core values during this Theme Year for Freedom of Expression, the cherry on the top of the sundae would be to rebrand the Cornell Law School the Ketanji Brown Jackson Law School.

    We could do no better!

While the Bear would not have used the word “hamstring” because it is an antisemitic and Islamophobic white supremacist word, in her brilliant interrogation of the lawyers arguing against government censorship in Murthy v Missouri, Justice Jackson captured the spirit of censorship at the core of the progressive Cornell Law School and especially the First Amendment Clinic. In the presence of greatness, Justices Kavanaugh and Coney Barrett were speechless!

In her eloquent way, Justice Jackson expressed her deepest concern about taking away the government’s ability to censor true scientific information characterized as disinformation when the government thinks that the citizens are too dumb to handle true information that goes against the government’s narrative:

Justice Jackson knows that the Declaration of Independence is a racist document that puts the power in the hands of the people rather in its rightful place with the government itself.

The Bear does not want the government to feel threatened by true information from the likes of Jay Bhattacharya, who because of his views has lost the status of a Person of Color, and whose words have the power to wound us.

Before any more people on the left such as Glenn Greenwald and Matt Taibbi become right wing extremists in the fight against censorship, and like Socrates, pollute our students minds, we must plant our flag for censorship and rebrand the Cornell Law School the Ketanji Brown Jackson Law School.

Nothing else could say “Freedom of Expression the Cornell Way” better.”

    1. Thank you wiseoldlawyer for sharing that. It is somewhat heartening to know that not all Ivy League students are completely braindead.
