Governor Larry Hogan on Tuesday directed the Maryland State police to suspend the state’s “good and substantial reason” standard for permits to carry handguns after the US Supreme Court struck down a similar New York law last month. In June, the US Supreme Court struck down in a 6-3 decision a New York law which required individuals applying for unrestricted handgun licenses to show they had a greater need for self-defence than the general public.

The European Union (EU) Tuesday officially approved two landmark pieces of digital consumer protection legislation: the Digital Markets Act (DMA) and the Digital Services Act (DSA). The packages, originally proposed in December 2020, includes bans on targeted advertising for children, dark patterns (apps that trick people into giving away personal information), companies favoring their own services, and companies preventing users from downloading other software.

An analysis by the Death Penalty Information Center (DPIC) has discovered rampant prosecutorial misconduct in death penalty prosecutions, finding more than 550 prosecutorial misconduct reversals and exonerations in capital cases, amounting to roughly 5.6 percent of all death sentences imposed in the United States in the past half-century, according to a recent press release.

France Tuesday repatriated 35 children and 16 mothers from suspected terrorist-associated camps in northeastern Syria. The mothers now face judicial proceedings, while the children will remain in the custody of French child welfare services.
