A Deep Dive Into One Of The Most Impactful Federal Judges Of The Last 30 Years

Upcoming talk with Judge Guido Calabresi.

941344Every federal judge is a superstar. Or, at least, that used to be the case. After ramming the courts full of loons and kids barely out of school, the whole thing’s lost a bit of its luster.

So let’s harken back to an era when the country drew its federal judges from the ranks of legal luminaries, elevating the dean of Yale Law School as opposed to handing lifetime appointments to the youngest ideologues off the street.

The NY State Bar Association Commercial & Federal Litigation Section is hosting a chat with Judge Guido Calabresi next Tuesday as a massive biography of the judge comes out this month (affiliate link… though attendees can get a further discount).

Many attorneys do not realize that Judge Calabresi’s Italian family was of Jewish heritage, and that along with his family he fled to America on the eve of World War II to avoid political and religious persecution.  His family arrived in America without money or social standing, but his talents and good fortune helped him to thrive as a student and to eventually become a leading legal scholar and a founder of the field of law and economics.  He was a legendary Dean of Yale Law School and for the past 30 years he has served as a judge on the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit.

The good old days when judges weren’t scouted from FedSoc message boards. Which is ironic since Judge Calabresi’s nephew founded the whole Federalist Society in the first place… even if the organization is trying to erase that fact from history.
