South Carolina Supreme Court declines to reexamine ruling striking down restrictive abortion law

In a 3-2 decision, the Supreme Court of South Carolina Wednesday denied multiple petitions for rehearing on their decision that South Carolina’s Fetal Heartbeat Protection From Abortion Act (Fetal Heartbeat Act) violated South Carolina constitutional privacy, due process and equal protection guarantees. The Fetal Heartbeat Act attempted to prohibit abortions after a fetal cardiac activity is detectable, typically around six weeks of gestation.

James Joseph is a UK staff correspondent for JURIST. It was announced Thursday in London that current Members of Parliament will be given a 2.9% pay rise from April 1st. This will bring their overall salary from £84,144 to £86,584. The Independent Parliamentary Standards Authority said the 2.9% increase was the same as the average increase in pay for public sector employees last year.

A Kenyan court ruled Monday that Meta, Facebook’s parent company, can be sued in a case involving mental injury to a former Facebook moderator in the course of his employment. Justice Jacob Gakeri rejected Meta Platform Inc.’s and Meta Platforms Ireland Ltd’s motion to dismiss, which claimed that the court lacked jurisdiction. Justice Gakeri stated that striking out plaintiff Daniel Motaung’s case due to a lack of jurisdiction would be premature.
