China passes law to protect wetlands

China adopted a new national law Friday for protecting wetlands. Under the new framework, land reclamation and drainage on wetlands will be generally prohibited, as well as the permanent blockage of water sources to natural wetlands. Other prohibited activities include the pollution of wetlands through the discharge of industrial or sewage wastewater and through excessive fertilization or pesticide use.

A Canadian federal court and the Court of Queen’s Bench of Manitoba issued a joint decision Wednesday approving an approximate $8 billion settlement agreement between the Canadian government and First Nation communities regarding access to clean and safe drinking water. Prime Minister Justin Trudeau campaigned in 2015 on the promise to end all long-term drinking water advisories on public water systems on First Nations reserves by March 2021.

Dutch antitrust regulator fines Apple for commission on in-app payments

The Authority for Consumers and Markets (ACM), the competition regulator of the Netherlands, Friday ruled that Apple’s commission policies on in-app payments violates the country’s competition law and ordered the company to adjust the payment policies of its App Store. In 2019, the ACM initiated an investigation on whether Apple’s practices amounted to an abuse of dominant market position and eventually narrowed down its scope to dating apps.
