Lawsuit claims New York law disqualifying felons from jury duty is discriminatory

The New York Civil Liberties Union (NYCLU) Thursday filed a class action lawsuit to challenge Section 510(3) of the New York Judiciary Law, which disqualifies people convicted of felonies from serving on juries, no matter the nature of the offense or how long ago the convictions occurred. The civil rights action challenges what the NYCLU calls “mass disenfranchisement of Black people— especially Black men—from the state court jury pool in Manhattan.” The lawsuit alleges that Section 510(3)

US House approves military $8.5B budget and elimates vaccine mandate for servicemembers

The US House of Representatives Thursday passed the National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA) which sets appropriations for the defense budget for fiscal year 2023. In total, the 3,854-page NDAA authorizes $857.9 billion in expenditures. Controversially, the bill would lift the COVID-19 vaccine mandate for members of the armed services. The Biden administration implemented the mandate in 2021.

Psychic Hoaxer Who Scammed Victim for Over $3 Million Sentenced to Federal Prison

Michael Paul Guzman and Samantha Stevens were both sentenced to time in federal prison on Thursday for their parts in a psychic hoax scheme that led to losses in the millions. In 2012, Stevens started giving fortune readings to one victim and claimed the victim needed to give her large sums of money to remove a curse on the victim’s family, according to a DOJ press release announcing the sentences.
