DC Attorney General sues NFL and associates for misrepresentations during toxic workplace investigation

US District of Columbia Attorney General Karl A. Racine Thursday filed a lawsuit against the Washington Commanders, team owner Dan Snyder, the National Football League (NFL) and NFL commissioner Roger Goodell for misrepresenting a toxic workplace investigation.

The Commanders’ workplace has faced allegations of sexual harassment, verbal abuse and other misconduct for decades. Although defendants stated that they were cooperating with a full investigation, Thursday’s lawsuit alleges that the defendants’ statements were misleading.

The Office of the Attorney General (OAG) launched an investigation into the Commanders’ and NFL’s response in Fall 2021. OAG interviewed many witnesses and thousands of internal documents and concluded that the Commanders and the NFL deceived District consumers. During the independent investigation, the Commanders and NFL entered into a private agreement giving Snyder the power to block information of his choosing from being publicly released. In a press release, AG Racine stated “In DC, you can’t lie to consumers to enrich yourself and get away with it. That’s what this lawsuit is about: standing up for DC residents who were deceived and misled. No one—not even Mr. Snyder—is above the law.”
