US Republican senators call for investigation into Bud Light partnership with transgender TikTok influencer

Senator Ted Cruz and Senator Marsha Blackburn wrote a letter to the CEO of Anheuser-Busch Wednesday calling for an investigation into the Bud Light partnership with transgender TikTok influencer Dylan Mulvaney.

The letter asserts that the partnership may have been an attempt to market beer to a demographic that is younger than the legal drinking age, which is 21 in the US. The letter addresses CEO Brendan Whitworth, who is also the chairman and senior director of the Beer Institute. The institute is the beer industry’s self-regulatory body with authority over beer advertising.

According to the institute’s Advertising/Marketing Code, beer advertising and marketing may “only be made where at least 73.6% of the audience is expected to be adults of legal drinking age. A placement will be considered compliant if the audience composition data reviewed prior to placement meets the percentage set forth above.” The letter argues that the general demographics of TikTok, Instagram and Mulvaney’s audience are targeted at a younger audience and violate the code.

The letter states:

The evidence detailed below overwhelmingly shows that Dylan Mulvaney’s audience skews significantly younger than the legal drinking age and violates the Beer Institute’s Advertising/Marketing Code and Buying Guidelines. We would urge you, in your capacity at Anheuser-Busch, to avoid a lengthy investigation by the Beer Institute by instead having Anheuser-Busch publicly sever its relationship with Dylan Mulvaney, publicly apologize to the American people for marketing alcoholic beverages to minors, and direct Dylan Mulvaney to remove any Anheuser-Busch content from his social media platforms.

In April, Mulvaney released a sponsored video with Bud Light to promote the beer. As part of the partnership, Mulvaney received a personalized can of Bud Light, celebrating her anniversary of transitioning. However, the partnership led to controversy and backlash among conservative consumers against transgender representation.

The complaint from the Republican Senators comes as conservative legislatures across the country target transgender rights. Most recently, Nebraska passed a bill restricting gender-affirming care for individuals under 19 years old.
